Particle design technology in lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery is indispensable for good mobile phones or lap-top computers. Also, the car industry is more and more focusing on the R&Ds for lithium-ion fuel cell.

The cathode of lithium-ion battery is made from lithiated transition metal oxide such as Lithium cobalt oxide. They are obtained through the reaction of mixing and baking raw material powders containing such metals. In the mixing process, the solid-phase reactor MIRALO is used to give mechanical force to the powders by the mixture of them, thus obtaining a highly crystalline target substance at a relatively low temperature. Since the low temperature inhibits particle growth, the big advantage is that the product obtained is a particulate material.

There is also another active R&D conducted for cathode of lithium-ion batteries by using our surface modification system, Hybridizer.
It is capable of coating carbon and various ceramic particles on the surface of positive electrode to inhibit time degradation and to improve circulation characteristics.

On the other hand, the main material for anode is carbon material. When the carbon material is processed by a surface modifier, Hybridizer, the carbon becomes spherical.
Spheroidization of carbon particles contributes to increase fluidity and filling density.
To control the characteristics of negative electrode, Hybridizer can coat silicon or various ceramics over the surface of carbon material.

Both cathode and anode become completed electrodes after being added conductive aids such as carbon black, then mixed with adhesive, and coated on aluminum foil or copper foil. For this mixing, wet type super fine milling and dispersion machine, MICROS is available.

In this way, technology from NARA MACHINERY can provide various solutions for making lithium-ion battery.
